  2. We have fixed compilation with any gcc compiler.
  3. We have fixed compatibility with festival 1.4.3, 1.95-beta, 1.96-beta.

Extract all

Once downloaded every needed file, You can extract them.
To extract a .tar.gz or .tgz files You may use the following command:
tar zxvf filename.tar.gz
There is no standard tool to extract a .zip file, but almost every system has its own utility.
Be careful to extract the files in the same order as listed above in this page.

  1. Extract festival and speech_tools

    This will create festival/ and speech_tools/ directories.
  2. Extract modules

    This will overwrite/add some files inside festival/ and speech_tools/ directories.
  3. Extract lexicons and schemes

    This will overwrite/add some files inside festival/ and speech_tools/ directories.
  4. Extract voices and MBROLA files

    If You want MBROLA voices, You need to extract the databases inside festival/lib/voices/italian/italian/ and be sure that MBROLA is in Your PATH.

Edit configuration files

  1. Edit speech_tools/include/unix/EST_socket_unix.h

    1. This is necessary only while compiling festival 1.4.3 with a recent version of cygwin.

      Replace the line

        #if defined(__CYGWIN__)

      with

                      #if defined(__CYGWIN__) && __GNUC__ <3

  2. Edit speech_tools/config/config.in

    Editing this file, You can configure compilation of speech_tools and festival.

    1. Choose a compiler:
      Search the following line
      COMPILER=@COMPILERTYPE@
      And replace @COMPILERTYPE@ with appropriate value
      i.e.:
      COMPILER=gcc295

      Maybe that on system with more than one version of gcc, You need to set the right name for the compiler. In the example above, on a Debian system with more than one version of gcc installed, this means edit speech_tools/config/config/compilers/gcc295.mak and replace the line
      GCC295 = gcc
      with the line
      GCC295 = gcc-2.95

      with newer version of festival, You need to change the line
      CXX = g++
      too.
      To compile with gcc 3.4 You can choose gcc32 as compiler and specify the rigth compiler name.
    2. Add PaintE, if needed
      Search the following line
      ALSO_INCLUDE=
      And replace it with
      ALSO_INCLUDE=ims_painte

  3. Edit speech_tools/main/Makefile

    This is only needed if You need Painte.
    Search the line containing
    BASESRCS =
    Then, on the first empty line, add
    BASESRCS += painte_analysis_main.cc painte_synthesis_main.cc

  4. Edit festival/config/config.in

    Editing this file, You can configure compilation of festival.

    1. Set libdir path
      By default festival put its schemes inside the festival/lib/ directory.
      If, after the compilation, You move that directory away, then festival will not find its schemes anymore.
      You can change the path at compile time by adding the following line to the end of the file:
      FTLIBDIR=path_to_festival_libdir
      i.e.:
      FTLIBDIR=/usr/share/festival/

    2. Add OGIresLPC, if needed
      Search the following line
      include $(EST)/config/config
      And add, after it, the following line
      ALSO_INCLUDE += OGIcommon OGIeffect OGIinsert OGIdbase OGIresLPC

  5. Edit festival/src/modules/Makefile

    This is only needed if You need OGIresLPC.
    Search the line containing
    OPTIONAL =
    Then, before the line containing
    ALL_DIRS =
    add
    OPTIONAL += OGIcommon OGIeffect OGIinsert OGIdbase OGIresLPC

Compile

Once configured, You can compile speech_tools and festival.
  1. cd speech_tools/
  2. ./configure && make
  3. cd ..
  4. cd festival/
  5. ./configure && make
  6. cd ..

Install

Put the contents of festival/lib/ inside the libdir directory You have choosen in the festival configuration files.
You can find the binary file in festival/src/main/

WARNING!!

While unzipping files use preferably 7zip or WinRar and if you want to use WinZip make sure that the smart CR/LF flag is not checked.
